What Makes Joanne Chang So Successful?
Monday night, chef Joanne Chang of Flour won the James Beard award (kind of like the Oscars for food people) for Outstanding Baker, a national category. This was a long time coming: She has been nominated, in several different categories, every year since 2011. Anyone who lives in the Boston area would agree the win is well deserved. Over the years, we’ve watched Chang turn her first Flour, in the South End, into a success — beloved for its champion sticky buns, cheeky riffs on childhood treats, savory sandwiches, and more. We’ve seen her expand — still more success — to locations in Fort Point, Central Square, and Back Bay. (More to come? I’m betting.) All the while, we’ve been caving to our dinnertime cravings for dumplings, tiger’s tears salad, and nasi goreng at the very lovable Myers + Chang, the restaurant she runs with husband Christopher Myers.
